Amicus curiae is Latin for friend of the court. Whenever there are issues in the court of appeals whether in the federal or the state system, the outcome could affect a large number of entities and parties that aren’t directly involved in the appeal. So in those situations, these parties will through lawyers like myself, submit friend of the court briefs and that’s what the amicus curiae brief is. It’s an opportunity for entities, individuals, businesses to present their viewpoints, their concerns to the court on matters that are vitally important to their interests.

California civil litigation defense attorney David Newdorf discusses the purpose of amicus briefs.
