If a company discovers they have an unanticipated open source piece of code in their software that causes an issue with either license lock or IP risk or that, their general choices are that they can either go back to a version that didn’t have that software in there and then develop going forward, therefore releasing an untainted version of that.  The other item would be to go out and obtain a license from the organization that has that code or, in many cases, pay for a non-GPL’d version of that code to be incorporated into your software.  So, there’s a number of remediation opportunities, not all of them are ideal in most cases.
