The one that really sticks out for me is one that we represented David Smith’s family. It settled for over three million dollars in 2013. And this was a situation where David, who is a mentally ill individual, was playing basketball at the YMCA. Some cops came up, put their hands on him, instead of dealing with him as they should have, a mentally ill individual. A bit of a struggle ensued. David was tased. He was put prone on the gym floor, handcuffed, and then two of the officers knelt on him to the point where he mechanically asphyxiated.

And that case was pretty hard to go through and watch, ‘cause actually there was – one of the officers had a pen camera of the whole incident. And, I mean, you’re watching this individual that you’ve gotten to know over the case, or the duration of the case, literally die and ________ breathe, also known as the death rattle, on tape. And so, it’s a hard thing to watch over and over, so it felt good to get that resolved for his family.

Minneapolis attorney Katie Bennett reflects on important cases she has worked on.
