The first thing that you should do if you’re a victim of campus sexual assault is to make sure that you’re in a safe place with people that can support you whether that be your peers, your parents, or the local rape crisis center. Even more importantly, however, is that you should immediately seek medical attention; which may involve a taking of a rape kit or an examination. And the reason that this is so important and this often gets overlooked because people are experiencing trauma in that moment is that even though you might not be ready or even be aware of what steps you might want to take down the line whether it be criminal prosecution or a civil case or even a Title IX complaint with your school. But it’s really important in the first 24-48 hours to preserve any kind of evidence of your sexual assault that can be used down the line. It’s something that you really it’s sort of you do it or you can never go back and redo it again.
New York sex abuse victim attorney, James Marsh, explains how after getting support, preserving evidence is important after being a victim of a sexual assault on campus.
