One of the most hardest things for a parent to contend with is that their child has been a victim of child sexual abuse whether it’s a parent, a co-parent, it’s often a relative. The thing that we found about childhood sexual abuse is that it’s often by somebody that the child knows. It’s very rarely a stranger and we hear a lot about stranger danger and we seem to be focused on that as a risk but the biggest risk factor for victims is someone they know. Whether that’s a teacher, a coach, a parent, a relative those kinds of things are difficult for parents to grapple with and certainly, all of the things that we’ve discussed apply to that situation too. You need to get the facts without pressuring your child. You need to preserve whatever evidence you can whether it’s through law enforcement investigation, through a medical examination, or taking to another professional. And then you need to decide what your best options are for dealing with that whether it be a criminal prosecution, a civil case, or some other way to make sure that your child is safe and that they can recover from what they’ve experienced.

New York sex abuse victim attorney, James Marsh, discusses how parents can help their children after their children have become victims of child sex abuse.
