Ordinary people have no idea how to shop for a lawyer, and so the important criteria are: get a recommendation or a referral from somebody that you know, or go through the Internet and look and see – and ask yourself, “Does this person seem good?” And then interview the lawyer, and you need to find out many things to do your due diligence: how long has the lawyer been practicing law, how long were they a prosecutor before they were a defense lawyer, how long have they been a defense lawyer now, how many cases like this have they handled, how many of those cases have gone to trial, and how many, if any, of those cases have they won? And if they’re not willing to answer those questions, that’s a red flag.

So the direct answer to your question is: be quiet, don’t give a statement to the police, and hire the very best lawyer that you can afford in a hurry so that that lawyer can direct you how to handle the accusation that has been made against you.

Minneapolis criminal defense attorney Kevin Short provides some tips for prospective clients charged with a sex crime.
