For me, I don’t want to sound tripe but every day I love my job. I mean I love my job. We are blessed with a ton of work and lots of really good and interesting cases so I am full on blitz all the time to get it done. But I wake up every day and I look forward to going to work and I come home and I’m telling my family about it and I just have a smile on my face all the time. That’s a personal reward of the practice is that I really enjoy it. I enjoy the fight, I enjoy the competition, I enjoy winning, and I enjoy hard work. I grew up with hard work and I’m not afraid of it. So I’m glad to find a place that allows me to both exercise my brain and my work ethic.

But that’s personal. The other side of that is seeing my advice or our collective work effort yield real changes in a client’s life whether it’s an individual that had some sort of personal injury and we do some of that on the mass tort side. Or a company that comes to you with this business relationship that’s just broken, this problem they don’t know what to do with. And they just hand it over to you and say look, we are at a place where we no longer can take care of this, we need your help.

And to look at the facts, do the triage, sort of get them set up in the right direction. Start the case, here are the things I’d look at, and to sort of breathe life back into their situation I find that, for me, it’s an amazing feeling to be able to provided that service. And at the end of the day, hopefully, you’ve gotten a good result. And whether it’s a perfect result or not you know there’s no such thing but you get to the place where they’re back on their feet and are able to do business again. It’s personally, again, very rewarding but it’s a wonderful thing to be able to have built a business that provides that service to people.

And I’ll give you an example on that. I spent the better part of the last two years working on an individual’s personal business relationship with a company he worked with. And if that case – and he’s a high-level executive who was involved in really significant and complex oil and gas transactions. But in those transactions, he bore personal liability for some of the debt involved and so it was very much playing, playing is the wrong word, we were dealing with his life. You know, his livelihood.

And we were able to but not only protect him from the downside of that but to achieve the collection that was not by any means guaranteed of the upside of that relationship. And meanwhile, he’s been able to take his life and his business practice and go forward into a whole other set of ventures.

And it’s, you know, I like to think, I mean, obviously, he had a lot to do with it by being just a really smart guy and savvy in the world but I like to think that we had a part to play in protecting him from what could have been real financial ruin and now to see where he’s at. I mean I look at that’s one example of a bunch more I can think of in terms of providing real value. Not just in the courtroom writing briefs and arguing, which is, of course, important, very important but that we had sort of the vision and the wisdom to guide that process and to put him back on a path to success, which I’m very proud of.
