Non-marital property is premarital property; it’s an inheritance of gift by someone outside the marriage to one of the parties but not both of the parties. It’s also property that’s validly called non-marital in a nuptial agreement or a post nuptial agreement. And it’s also non-marital property that’s in exchange for other property. For example, if you had a pre-marital couch and then you sold the couch and then you bought a chair you could still call the chair non-marital property.
