This goes back some time, but one of the most famous cases in product liability law was against Ford Motor Company for the Pinto. They defectively designed the gasoline tank so that if there’s a rear-end collision, rather than being protected, the gasoline tank could rupture and explode. That caused hundreds of injuries, serious injuries and deaths in this country, and a jury in California found that they defectively designed the gas tank system and that Ford was liable for, at that time, a huge sum of money.
