So parental alienation syndrome is not technically diagnosable under the DSM V R what the psychologists use to diagnose a child. And actually, the child would be the one with the diagnosis. But this it’s a behavior trait is what we will refer to; you can get any licensed psychologist to refer to it as traits of alienation. And it is the biggest form of child abuse that I’m seeing in my practice right now. It really, really, really damaging for children. Long term repercussions for the mental health of the children, for the relationship with both parents.

And so I’ve been focusing a lot of my practice on I’ve had to terminate someone’s parental rights because they could not stop parental alienating. There’s extreme forms and then there’s much slighter, more subtle forms. We see a lot of extreme forms in the family courts and the judges have really gotten educated about it. And there are remedies but it’s usually there’s not – I’ve had very few successful outcomes. I can get a good legal outcome but the damage is usually done with that relationship.

Dallas, TX family law attorney Lisa E. McKnight talks about the definition of parental alienation syndrome.
