Owner operators are independent contractors, and there are innumerable industries, whether service-related industries or retail or product that employee independent contractors. And I think the lesson that is taken, especially from this particular issue is the importance of handling and treating independent contractors appropriately.

For any industry that uses independent contractors for whatever reason, I think it’s a good idea to look at the transportation industry and the construction industry and note and understand what’s happening in the transportation and construction industry and recognize that if you use independent contractors, what’s happening in the transportation industry could just as easily happen to your particular industry as well, whether it’s manufacturing or retail or any service-related industry.

The lesson is they can be a fabulous asset. It can be a wonderful thing to be able to use independent contractors, but do it correctly, understand what the laws are so that you avoid problems in the future
