Before I went to law school, I worked as a newspaper reporter and I was involved in some of the things I ended up doing as a lawyer. I wrote about cops, I wrote about government, all different kinds of news for local daily newspapers. And then I decided that it was time for a new career and I went to law school, after law school I worked for a large law firm. I had an experience for a year working as a federal court clerk, which was a great experience because I got to work with an excellent federal judge in his chambers on the actual kinds of cases that you see as a practicing lawyer but from the judges perspective.

I left the large law firm experience because I wanted to get more actual courtroom experience and went to work for the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office. So at San Francisco City Attorney’s Office I developed my experience representing public entities, which has its own special area of the law. I handled a variety of cases everything from bus accidents to multimillion-dollar commercial disputes, as well as defending class actions for the city.

The city was a great place to work but eventually I decided that I wanted to do something a little bit different and a little bit more entrepreneurial and went out and started my own small firm. And I feel like I have found the place that I’m going to be practicing for the rest of my career.

California civil litigation defense attorney David Newdorf reflects on his background as a lawyer.
