Tom Petters Litigation

Business litigation is primarily what I do and you’re correct it is a broad category of cases. One of the more interesting ones I had was a few years back when I was approached by a client who had alleged that they were defrauded by Tom Petters and several of the companies he owned. The allegation was that Mr. Petters basically engaged in a shell game with various entities to avoid paying an obligation. We litigated that case for probably a year and a half. I deposed Tom Petters for eight hours in this room and to say the least he was an interesting man. But unfortunately, before we finished that case we were well down the road of proving the fraud claims and proving the shell game but then the federal government swooped in and charged Mr. Petters with running one of the biggest Ponzi schemes in the history of Minnesota. So ultimately, we did settle that case but it was in the bankruptcy proceedings after Mr. Petters was in prison.

Minneapolis, MN litigator David Olsen talks about working on a case investigating fraudulent acts of Tom Petters, who famously was convicted of massive business fraud.
