My practice sort of breaks down into a couple areas. First of all, I still have this significant litigation practice. So, I’ve got – let’s call it “contract.” Usually, my litigation stuff involves dirt. So, real estate, construction, titles – something involving dirt. And that’s sort of the main focus of my litigation practice.

My corporate practice has kind of two components, too. Still a lot of real estate and construction.

So, I – someone has a residential contract – I almost always represent builders and developers. So, they’re doing a development; we need to do development; we need to put contracts together. On the residential side, either single-family, multi-family. And then, finally, I do a lot of commercial stuff. So, I represent a lot of commercial builders and renovators, and we do IA contracts and other contracts. So, I’m negotiating those.

And then, the last component is this general corporate stuff, which is great. I’m doing sort of everything relating to the business: merger and acquisition, whether they’ve got a tax issue, whatever. And I’m sort of the quarterback, and the word “counselor” is relevant. I mean, it wasn’t when I was a young lawyer; then, it was like – but, as my practice has evolved, now it’s – I counsel them. We figure out how to avoid and solve problems it’s – I counsel them. We figure out how to avoid and solve problems. How to go – do we go this way, or do we go that way?

And that’s the most rewarding part of what I do, where you get to kind of talk through the issues, and then make a decision. And that’s what gets me charged up every day. So, that’s how it’s evolved and what I do, and it’s wonderfully complex and diverse.

Minneapolis business attorney Stephen Yoch of Felhaber Larson reflects on his experience as a lawyer.
