An inheritance, as most people probably understand, is an estate left for somebody when someone passes away. A lot of people are very concerned about, “Well, is my spouse going to be able to get my inheritance that I’ve already received upon our divorce?” That’s a really interesting question, because if you can prove that it’s really your inheritance and it was just left to you and not to you and your spouse the next question is what did you did with it once you had it? Did you mix it with a bunch of other money or did you keep it separate? Did you have earnings on it that were reinvested into your inheritance? And the earnings part can be marital and so you have to be careful about it getting reinvested into your non-marital property. You want to make sure that you’re, number one, keep really good records.
