The answer is that the insurance structure is a little bit different. Very often, those no-fault benefits aren’t available, so people don’t purchase medical coverage to cover them while they’re riding a motorcycle. You’re not required to have that like you are with a car or a motor vehicle. So the first thing I tell people is if you own a motorcycle and you drive it, make sure that you purchase medical coverage to cover you in the event you’re hurt.
The other way that they’re different is in the severity. You’re obviously less protected when you’re riding a motorcycle. You’re less visible, and the motorcycle crash cases that I’ve typically had over the years involve some pretty horrific and catastrophic injuries, oftentimes terrible brain injuries, paraplegia and quadriplegia and obviously death, and so I’d encourage everybody to keep an eye out for motorcycles. They obviously have as much right to the road as anybody else. On the other hand, if you’re a motorcycle driver, you need to drive defensively and be aware that you’re less visible than a car.
