One of the things that I do is I try to be a realist about things, and I look at really, “Let’s take a look at this problem. Right now it’s the biggest, most important thing in your life, but let’s take a look at the potential results.” And the one piece of advice that I give people is I tell them, “Let’s take a look at the five-year rule. In five years, what will this really matter? And all of your energy and your emotions are being devoted towards this issue right now, but in five years, what will it matter?”

And I don’t say that to have clients fold the tent and move on and just give up on whatever endeavor they’re pursuing, but I just – it tries to – I try to have them take a look at it in perspective, in the bigger picture of life, what does this really matter? And there’s a lot of issues that when they’re on the – when they’re fresh and they’re hot and people are pursuing ’em, it’s the only thing in their life. But as often as not, it’s – five years later it’s like, “Wow. What was I doing?” And I really try get ’em to look out in the future and just see we’re gonna try to get the best result we can, but when you’re considering that, you need to consider all the factors. And my five-year rule I think really brings that point across well.

Minneapolis Family Law, Real Estate & Estate Planning Attorney John Brandt, talks about the advice he’s constantly giving to his clients.
