The philosophy that guides the attorneys at Scrofano Law PC, it’s basically three core principles. Honesty, commitment and creativity. We’re honest with our clients throughout the process every step of the way. We don’t scare our clients into pleading guilty. We don’t over-promise our clients some impossible result. We’re committed to their case 110 percent. Being a criminal defense lawyer is not a 9:00 to 5:00 job. When we have clients who have to, for example self surrender on a warrant their attorney will be with them at the police station at 6:00 in the morning committed to their case from the very beginning. Creativity is our third core principle at Scrofano Law PC. You don’t get cookie cutter legal services at Scrofano Law PC. We look for creative solutions to get the client through the case with the least possible consequences for what’s happening in their life.

So at Scrofano Law PC we pride ourselves as being a trial firm. You know, we’re not afraid to try difficult cases. We’re not afraid to fight the government and force the government to prove their case. However, we oftentimes advise clients to take diversion when that’s available to them. And diversion is a process where it typically involves for in cases where the client may be a first offender depending on the charges, the government may offer some type of deal that says if you jump through some hoops, if you take some classes, you do some community service, you pay some fines at the end of the process we’ll guarantee a dismissal of your case. That situation is the only scenario in the criminal justice system where the client is in control of their own destiny.

So we oftentimes advise clients to take diversion where it’s available. You know, if they are required to do a series of conditions as part of the agreement, they know that they can complete those conditions and have their case dismissed, and that’s a guarantee. There is a lot of risk in trial. There is a lot of risk in just straight up pleading guilty and getting sentenced to an offense. So while we often go to trial, we often advise our clients to take diversion when it’s available to them.

Washington, DC criminal defense lawyer Joseph A. Scrofano talks about the philosophy of his practice and shares his most common advice to clients.
