When I think about why I’m a lawyer I like to think about a phrase I heard through the Trial Lawyers College was that I’m here to represent the damned. I’m here to help people who need a voice. I’m here to fight for people who don’t have anyone to fight for them. And when a client comes in and meets with me one of the things I let them know, one think I make clear from the very beginning is my job is to be a tool. My job is to be a tool for you. I want to fight for you and I want to make sure that every time you interact with me on your case or anything else going on in your life that you know I have your back and your side.

So when I think about why do I do the things I do as a criminal defense attorney or what type of criminal defense attorney I am, I believe I’m an aggressive attorney who fights for their clients and I believe that my clients know that I have their back in all situations. And when I look at what I do, that’s how I want to be known as being a criminal defense attorney in Washington, DC.

I graduated from law school in 2012 and immediately after graduating law school I threw out my shingle. Ever since I started going to law school, I knew I wanted to open my own practice. I knew I wanted to be a criminal defense attorney and my reasons were pretty basic. I wanted to fight. I wanted to fight for people who I felt were oppressed. I wanted to fight for people who I felt like they were going up against a system that was unfair. And I saw that, you know, being a criminal defense attorney gave me a venue, an arena to do that, to fight against a system that I felt like needed someone to get in there and be a bulldog for someone and it also gave me a way to help people.

One of my favorite things is when I get to, I go home some nights, I grab my four-year old boy, he asks me what I’m doing and I said, “I got to fight and help people.” I love it. I like going home, going to bed at night, and knowing that I did something with my time that I love and I was also able to help someone.

Washington, DC criminal defense lawyer Christopher J. Mutimer talks about why he became a lawyer and the background/experience that prepared him for his current practice.
