Ira was my mentor in my original firm and Ira taught me many things. But one that stands out in my mind as a young lawyer is not to be afraid to advance ideas as very young lawyer that are creative and outside the box even if some of them are going to be terrible ideas because the only way you can find the good ones is to not be afraid to try. And he compared this to drilling oil wells, which I often found very enlightening. If you’re in the oil business, you’re going to have to drill a certain number of dry wells in order to find one with oil but if you’re not willing to have dry wells, you will never find oil. So that’s very much what it’s like as a lawyer coming up with new and innovating ways to advance your clients interest. I’ve always taken that to heart and I think it’s helped me very much in my practice.

New York antitrust and sports law attorney Jeffrey Kessler of Winston & Strawn discusses his mentor.
