I’m actually not a big fan on using mediation as a tool. Mediation theoretically is great because it’s the process that allows the two people to form their own agreement with the help of a third person. The problems I run into most of the time with mediation, however, is either the mediator doesn’t want to spend the amount of time it takes to truly help a couple mediate an issue, which can be time consuming and taxing, or one of the couples wanted to use mediation because it allows them to assert a lot more authority and control because it’s a confidential closed-door proceeding.

New Jersey family law attorney, Brad Micklin, discusses the impact mediation can have on divorce proceedings.
