Really educating the decision maker whether it’s a judge ruling on a motion or a jury is key to police misconduct cases. I work with experts in the field of police training and police procedures and we will bring in these experts, people who are actually involved in a day-to-day basis with the training of police officers as educators. Because really my job is to teach the jury, teach the judge why police officers are trained to do what they do. Oftentimes, police officers are required to make very difficult decisions about use of force in a fraction of a second, facing potential dangers to themselves and to the public. That’s a challenge and that’s where we bring in the best-qualified experts to support our police officers and to support our case.

And generally, even in today’s environment where allegations of police misconduct are being talked about in the media and in social media, something that everyone has an opinion about these days whether it’s in favor of or against police, when we do our job and educate the judge and the jury about why police are trained to behave the way they are, we find that reasonable officers will not be held liable for the injuries in the course of their work.

California civil litigation defense attorney David Newdorf shares how he informs people on the inner-workings of police procedure.
