My involvement with the 35W Bridge case stems from a call I got from my friend Chris Messerly at Robins. Our daughters played hockey together and we knew each other well and he wanted to know if I could help with the Bridge Consortium and some of the clients on that. Of course I said I would and as we got into it, you know certain firms had more involvement and they were looking for people to take on certain tasks. I think the people at Robins knew what lawyers they wanted to take to do what thing. I mean Phil Sieff was ramrodding that party operation and he made sure that Tim and I had important people whose deposition was taken. There were many, many depositions taken but I took for example the three-day deposition of the engineer in charge at URS. So the head guy for the defendant and the same thing for the State Bridge Engineer. They were important depositions, critical as several of them were to the issue of whether URS owed punitive damages to the people who had been hurt on the bridge. They were the sort of main stage of the proof of liability of URS and all of my partners and associates chipped in and looked at millions of documents with the Robins firm and other firms, but we had a significant role. Certainly the Robins, Kaplan firm had the lion’s share but we were very much involved. Messerly and I were going to lead the trial team, which included Phil Siefer and Tim Schepp and a couple other people, too.
