One question I get a lot from my clients is how long is this going to take? And the best answer is that it depends. It depends on the emotions of the parties’ involved, it depends on the judge that is assigned to your case, it depends on the county that you have. This is why I only practice in a few counties because I want to be able to answer these questions based on the client’s cases.

So what a client can do to reduce the length of the case is when an attorney sends you assignments make sure you get on them right away. What’s called the discovery process sometimes extends the case a little longer and that’s gathering financial information. So if you are thinking about divorce and you want to go through a divorce you right as well start planning now. Get your financial documents together because a lot of times that’s what really drags out the process is gathering all that information.

So some contested divorces can take up to a year or more, some cases that resolve will take three to six months, it really just depends on your preparedness, your attorney’s preparedness and your willingness to focus on resolving the issues rather than a desire to go to court.
