00:04
i chose to become a lawyer
00:06
interestingly it was my dad’s suggestion
00:08
originally
00:09
he grew up in pretty difficult
00:11
circumstances his father passed when he
00:13
was very young
00:14
so he became sort of the man of the
00:16
house at a pretty young age
00:17
and he had always wanted to go to law
00:19
school but he didn’t financially really
00:21
have that opportunity
00:22
so he planted the idea with me pretty
00:24
early on because i had good verbal
00:26
skills good communication skills
00:28
and he and my mom never pushed me they
00:30
were very supportive of
00:31
whatever my educational goals were but
00:33
that idea he planted early on stuck with
00:36
me
00:36
and of course it didn’t hurt that there
00:38
were shows like l.a law and all the
00:39
things you see on tv that make it look
00:41
pretty glamorous
00:42
but are pretty different from the way
00:43
the law really is but it gave me that
00:46
uh that drive and that interest in
00:49
becoming a lawyer and learning skills
00:52
that i could use to help people who
00:53
can’t help themselves
00:55
and so i carried that idea with me that
00:58
i wanted to be a lawyer
00:59
all the way through high school all the
01:01
way through college so i had a pretty
01:02
direct
01:03
path i always knew what i wanted to do i
01:05
knew what i wanted to major in
01:06
and i carried that right through law
01:08
school and then became a lawyer
01:10
and it was actually only once i became a
01:13
lawyer that i had to make some decisions
01:14
about exactly what kind of law i wanted
01:16
to practice and how i could best
01:18
help people
01:24
the most rewarding aspect of my practice
01:26
has got to be helping good families
01:28
solve
01:28
problems before they happen in a
01:30
previous part of my career i was a
01:32
litigator which means i went to court
01:33
and i
01:34
argued over things for people and that’s
01:35
a really important part of the law it’s
01:37
a necessary part of the law because
01:39
sometimes people can’t agree
01:41
but what my partner mike and i find is
01:43
if we do our jobs right
01:44
early on it’s successful families people
01:47
who are already doing the right thing
01:48
they’ve come to us
01:50
and all they want to do is protect what
01:52
they already have
01:53
and make things as smooth and as easy
01:55
and as beneficial as possible for
01:57
themselves and for their family members
01:59
and if we do the planning right which we
02:01
focus very hard on doing
02:03
we can solve the problems before they
02:04
ever happen so the litigation is never
02:06
necessary
02:07
families aren’t torn apart we don’t see
02:09
these terrible emotional disputes that
02:11
can occur
02:12
when planning isn’t done ahead of time
02:14
so the most rewarding part of my
02:16
practice is definitely
02:17
sitting across the table from someone
02:19
working with them to create a plan that
02:21
i know is going to benefit their family
02:23
for years to come
