I think the most important reasons to have an estate plan is probably two. One is to ensure that everything that you have as far as assets and valuables will go to the people that you want to receive it. But second, probably more important is having a plan in place eliminates the hardship that your family and friends will incur by having to go to court and file papers to get appointed to handle your estate or your affairs when it hasn’t been provided for. And they’re already dealing with a tragic loss so you really want to ease the burden as much as you can.
