You know, the answer to that is not as clear as you might think it should be in this day and age I’ll give you a couple of examples. First of all, Minnesota statute is very clear that you may not discriminate against an employee based on sexual orientation. However, there are some exemptions from that prohibition. Now the first one whether you agree with it or you disagree with it I think most people can at least understand it and that is religious organizations are exempt from that statute. So if a religious organization wants to discriminate based on sexual orientation they can. Again, I don’t like it, I don’t agree with it but I understand that.

There’s another exemption though that I have a big problem with and that is there’s an exemption in Minnesota statutes for youth organizations. It’s actually possible for the 4-H clubs, scouting groups, those sorts of groups they may under Minnesota law continue to discriminate against people based on their sexual orientation, which is shocking to me in this day and age.

Minneapolis, MN investor advocacy attorney F. Chet Taylor talks about whether it’s okay for employers to discriminate against employees based on sexual orientation.
