The penalties for embezzlement essentially follow the same penalties with respect to theft. If it’s under $500.00 zero to 90 days in jail. If it’s between $500.00 and $1,000.00 in terms of total value of the item stolen, it’s a gross misdemeanor up to a year in jail and a $3,000.00 fine. With respect to felonies, again, it would be a year and a day in prison or more and a fine substantially higher than $3,000.00. Now, you have to be very, very careful with respect to felony thefts anything over $2,500.00 tends to be treated more harshly, anything more than $5,000.00, again, the same arithmetic applies the penalties grow exponentially.

Eden Prairie criminal defense attorney Martin Azarian discusses penalties if you are convicted with embezzlement under Minnesota law.
