I think the most common, a lot of people think that you have to be physically separated for eighteen months before you can get divorced, which is incorrect. It’s really just one of the reasons that you can get divorced. And then the others surround alimony. I’ve heard a lot of people tell me that they don’t believe you can get alimony unless you’re married more than ten years or you can’t get it if you’ve committed adultery. And none of those are true. The alimony statute’s actually much more complex than that. But these seem to be the top three misconceptions people come to my office with.
