Well, a lotta people say – and it is true, to a certain extent – that the most common area, over the 30 years that I’ve been doing this, has been accusations that are made in the context of a divorce or an acrimonious marriage. We very oftentimes see them there. But that’s, like all generalizations, it’s not always true.

I say that these accusations can be made in any of the settings that make up our everyday lives. We know that these accusations arise in church settings. We know they arise in Boy Scout settings. We know they arise in Little League and rec league settings. We know they arise in daycare settings. They arise everywhere that we have people and we have men and women who are – who may interact sexually, or they arise in every setting where we have adults and children where there is potential for an accusation to be made. And so the context – there are certain contexts – divorces, daycares, coaches, teachers, mentors, big brothers. We see common – you know, uncles, family gatherings at Christmastime, sleepovers.

There are many, many, many settings where these accusations can be made, but at the end of the day, they’re made because people interact with each other, and sometimes inappropriate sexual assaults occur, and sometimes false accusations of that same thing are made.

Minneapolis criminal defense attorney Kevin Short explains how sex crimes often are alleged in heated divorce proceedings.
