Well, first of all, you have to pass an exam. Probably did that about ten years ago. But then you have to have enough experience points of handling enough trials, jury trials, court trials, depositions, and hearings to qualify to be a certified civil trial specialist.  Then you need to every three years recertify through, again, having trial experience and/or taking continuing legal education to make sure you keep that certification current.
