In cases where the parties have a child out of wedlock, you can file what’s called a parentage action, or what some people know as a paternity action. Once you file a parentage action, you can establish who the father of the child is, who the mother of the child is, and establish a support order.

Los Angeles, CA family law attorney Lauren O. Youngman talks enforcing paternity actions in order to receive child support. She explains that when unmarried individuals have a child together, they have the option to initiate a legal proceeding known as a parentage action, or commonly referred to as a paternity action. By filing a parentage action, the objective is to determine the biological father and mother of the child and establish a support order. This legal process helps establish the legal rights and responsibilities of each parent towards the child, including custody, visitation, and financial support.
