Child Support Revisions

I think revisions to the child support guidelines would help families going through the divorce process because they would take into account the actual needs of parenting in modern day. The child support guidelines were created, I think, in the ’70s, and they’re presumed to be correct, but they don’t account for how parenting has changed. In the ’70s, children were free to sort of wander the streets and play in parks where now they have play dates and extracurricular activities. That wasn’t taken into account when the guidelines were created, and I think it’s a great deficiency. And then second, the guidelines apply equally to everybody throughout the state. And the cost of living in a northern state like Bergen County is significantly different than the cost of living in a southern county like Camden County. And I think there needs to be some kind of adjustment for the actual cost of living.

New Jersey family law attorney, Brad Micklin, speaks about the revisions to child support and how it would positively impact families in the divorce process.
