In California, child support is calculated using a tax software called the Dissomaster. This is the software the judges use, this is the software that we have on our computers, and the two major components that go into calculating what’s called guideline child support is each parent’s gross monthly income and the custodial timeshare, meaning how much time any children spend with each of the parents. There are a couple of other factors that can be added in that affect the numbers a little bit but those two are the big ones, and generally speaking, if you leave it up to a judge you’re going to end up with guideline child support. There are some legal arguments for deviated from guideline child support but those tend to be the exception.
