How did I become a work comp attorney? It is not something that work comp attorneys probably sit around and think about because there’s so much going on on a day-to-day basis. We probably don’t reflect on that enough. But personally, my father was a teacher, an educator, a coach, a high school coach and so I grew up in a family of educators. And we had a very strong work ethic in our household and as early as I can remember I was out working on some summer job or part time job as I was going through school. And when I started practicing in this field helping workers, the men and women of Minnesota who have the misfortune of having to get stuck in the work comp system get out of it, it just was such a fit. Because I could relate a little bit to my upbringing and working with working men and women and educating them, which is really what I do. So in a way we’re kind of teachers in this business because our clients have no idea, they’re like high school freshman going to school not knowing what’s going to happen but they figure it out with a little guidance. And that’s what we do; we have to guide our clients through this. And so it just seemed to be to me a really a good fit and I’ve never really looked back once I fell into it a little bit.

Minneapolis workers’ compensation attorney Mark Olive reflects on how he became an attorney doing workers’ compensation.
