Obviously, art law – not just looted art – but my wife is an artist and I have represented artists and galleries, and in one case a school that was going under, that we helped save, where we turned it into a nonprofit. So a component is art. Randy’s interested in art. I’m interested in art. Other people who work with us interested in art.

We otherwise will run the gamut depending on the nature of the business. We have a client in France who is kind of a mini-conglomerate. He himself owns interests in a number of businesses and they have all kinds of issues in the United States. One time I remember they were involved with the Spanish publisher of Hustler magazine, and so the counsel in Spain wanted us to file suit against Larry Flynt, and that was an experience in terms of what happened there. We ultimately were able to settle that one.

But so it’s hard to say that I get up in the morning and I say, okay, give me your next case involving the railroads or give me your next case involving the manufacture of whatever we’re talking about – plastic manufacture. It’s more that we’re inclined to talk to someone who has a business, or lost a business, and has a legal issue coming out of it. I consider myself in many ways – if you remember The Godfather movies – a consigliore, an advisor, a person who uses his experience – and it’s obviously her experience with women – to somehow shape disputes, keep ’em out of litigation, make sure the litigation’s not too overwhelming, that kind of thing.

Unlike some firms who may have a couple of huge clients and just concentrate on the kind of work they’re doing for them, we run the gamut. And we always bring in an expert where it’s necessary. For example, we have hired a number of business transactions – sales and purchases – and in those transactions we have a situation very often where what’s going on in is there’s a tax implication, a serious one. We have some tax people. We send them to the client and the client picks one. We work with a tax person in that regard.

So we’re consigliore, somewhat generalists in terms of the thing. I know enough, and my partners know enough, to understand the issues.

Los Angeles, CA business attorney Donald S. Burris talks about how his firm focuses on various aspects of business law.
