So if you’re the breadwinner in your family, will you have to pay spousal support in the divorce? The answer, probably yes, at least for a short period of time. Alimony in New Jersey’s a complex issue in terms of many different factors, but essentially the court’s gonna look at the lifestyle, the length of the marriage, the higher-earning spouse’s ability to pay, and the lower-earning spouse’s needs. So if the other spouse is a stay-at-home, there’s gonna at least be a transition time, at a minimal, where there’s gonna need financial support so that they can move, possibly get a security deposit, down payment, and time to find a job. So I think, at a minimal, there’s gonna be at least a short-term alimony.
