If you have an adult child that lives with you, whether or not the spouse would have to contribute to child support will depend first to whether or not there’s an actual child support order in place ’cause if there is in New Jersey, the order doesn’t terminate by the reaching of a certain age. It’s only terminated by a future court order. So in the case where there is one, it continues indefinitely. But more importantly, it’s gonna be determined whether or not it should continue based on the special needs of the child. Whether or not the child has moved beyond needing parental support is the issue the court will have to determine as to whether or not to end child support once they become an adult.

New Jersey family law attorney, Brad Micklin, explains how adult children factor into child support.
