Acting Outside General Counsel

I would say almost every day. I have – and I should probably say, “outside general counsel” is not an official title. I just do a lot of general counseling work for my clients. I’ve got really awesome clients that I talk to all the time, and that’s really the best part of the job. I mean, they call up and say, “Look, we’ve got this issue – what do you think?” “Hey, we’re going to start this new business somewhere,” or “Something bad just happened. What should we do?”

And it’s my job to talk through the problem with them – to quarterback it and figure out how we’re going to respond. And that happens every single day, and that is – and sometimes, I don’t know the answer, so I go and talk to a partner. Or I go, “You know, let’s go talk to your accountant, and let’s figure it out.”

It’s problem-solving in a collaborative way. The word “counselor” becomes really relevant. And it’s what I like best.

Minneapolis business attorney Stephen Yoch of Felhaber Larson discusses how he is acting as outside general counsel in some capacity every day of his legal practice.
