One of the most typical questions I get at the _____ of the process I’ll get a call, someone found me through the internet or was referred to me and one of their first questions is I want you to do my estate plan, how much is this going to cost? The analogy I use it’s like you’re asking me to build a house and I have no idea what size of house I’m going to be building. And I get that, you want to know what it’s going to cost you but I don’t have a blueprint yet developed of what it’s going to look like. Which is why I agreed to meet with you without charge for however long it takes to make sure, number one, that we have the chemistry together. And number two, that I can help you with what you want to achieve.
During our initial meeting, we talk about the nature and extent of your assets. We talk about your family background. And we talk about what you’d like to accomplish and hopefully, that process is educational enough for you that we can come up with a plan for you to consider. We don’t start the professional relationship until we have a signed engagement letter and we put together a very detailed engagement letter about what we’re hearing is your intent with respect to your estate planning documents. We also send out a letter before our initial meeting asking you to bring a considerable amount of information and documentation with you so we can make the first meeting as productive as possible.
