Money laundering is one of the oldest crimes there is. It’s basically when people take money that they get from any illegal activity whether it’s robbery, drug dealing, prostitution, murder, insider trading and they take that cash and they launder it and wash it through a legal legitimate enterprise. For example, if you made half a million dollars selling drugs and then you bought a house in cash for half a million dollars and then you sold that house. So now when you get the proceeds of the sale of a house it has gone through a legitimate activity and you’ve laundered that dirty money and you’ve made it look clean.
