You need an attorney to help you with your divorce proceeding because you don’t know what you don’t know. You can read all you want on the Internet. You may even understand the definitions, but how to apply them and get what you want is something totally else – totally different. And when I’m walking on the beach and I step on a shell, I can conceptually read all I want about how to put in stitches and heal my foot, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that I can do it right and do it well. And yet in that example, a divorce is so much more than just a cut on your foot.

It is your entire future, your family life, your rights and responsibilities regarding your children, income, assets, debts. There’s too much there to handle in order to be able to just think that you can do that yourself and do it well. The number of clients I get that call me saying, “I got divorced six months ago and these are all the things I wanna change when we tried to do it ourselves,” is too frequent, and those people end up having to be stuck with a lot of the things that they negotiated because there’s not a lot of opportunity to unscramble eggs.
