The forward citation landscape is a landscape of all the patents that were issued after the patent in question and refer back to the patent in question. So if I am company X, and I issue a patent today, in the future other patents may issue, and those patents may refer back to my patent.

And the patents that are issued in the future that refer back are called forward cited art landscape. And again, we look at the number of companies that own those patents, we look at how many patents those companies own each, and we can determine the relative competitors typically in the field.
