What are the consequences of defaming someone?

Transcript:

Well, it’s not against the law to defame somebody. It’s not a criminal violation. It’s a civil lawsuit that results. And the goal of most civil lawsuits is to, number one, restore reputation by having a jury or a judge say that the statement was not true. And, number two, to compensate the victim of the defamation with an award of damages. And if there’s a book publisher involved or if something’s written on the Internet, you can also get what’s called an injunction to prevent further publication.
