Usually I do, and I mean that in two ways. First, I require a written retainer agreement in most circumstances. A client I’ve worked with for 30 years doesn’t have to sign a written retainer agreement for every case. But, I like to have written retainer agreements, and I also like to get payment upfront, which is another way to define retainer if I have a client with whom I have not worked before.
