Laura Shamp’s journey from being a college athlete in the Final Four to graduating with honors from Harvard Law School reflects her unwavering competitive spirit and commitment to winning.

Throughout her impressive career spanning two decades, Laura has tackled a wide range of significant litigation cases, earning a reputation as one of the few trial attorneys capable of securing multimillion-dollar verdicts even in challenging jurisdictions. Her notable achievements include an $11 million jury verdict against Philip Morris. It comes as no surprise that she consistently garners recognition as one of Georgia’s esteemed “Super Lawyers.”

Laura’s prowess as a trial lawyer is paralleled by her exceptional skills as an appellate advocate. Her involvement in reported cases has significantly influenced Georgia’s legal landscape, particularly in matters pertaining to medical malpractice and the use of expert witness testimony in professional negligence cases. Some noteworthy cases she has contributed to include Hankla v. Postell, 293 Ga. 692, Georgia Supreme Court 2013; EHCA Cartersville v. Turner, 280 Ga. 333, Georgia Supreme Court 2006; Lee v. Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, 297 Ga. App. 692, Georgia Court of Appeals (2009); Houston v. Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, 295 Ga. App. 674, Georgia Court of Appeals 2009. Additionally, Laura serves as the chair of the Georgia Trial Lawyers Amicus Committee, which advocates for the civil justice system by submitting “friend of the court” briefs to the Georgia Supreme Court and Georgia Court of Appeals.

In 1988, Laura graduated with honors from Harvard Law School. Following her graduation, she worked as a federal law clerk for United States District Court Judge Robert H. Hall. In 2004, she returned to Harvard to pursue studies on patient safety and medical errors under the guidance of Don Berwick and Lucian Leape, esteemed figures in the field of patient safety. In 2005, she obtained a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health. Laura remains dedicated to enhancing the quality of medical care in Georgia and actively serves on various committees involved in reviewing legislation to address issues related to medical errors and patient safety.

Before establishing Shamp Silk, Laura successfully ran her own solo practice for over 15 years. Prior to that, she gained experience at Doffermyre, Shields, Canfield, Knowles & Devine, where she focused on plaintiffs and general civil litigation for four years. She began her legal career as a general civil litigator at Sutherland Asbill & Brennan.

Laura is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court and the Supreme Court of the State of Georgia, in addition to all other trial and appellate courts in Georgia.
