One prevents genericide by monitoring how their mark is used both by themselves and their employees and by consumers. If consumers or businesses misuse the mark, then that business or consumer should be informed of that and be corrected and be asked to stop. Coca Cola Company sends out people to order a Coke or a Coca Cola and if they are given a non-Coke product that business organization is told that when a person asks for a Coke they are asking for a particular product and not just a cola.
